Indonesia’s digital economy is set to surge to USD 600 billion by 2030, according to Minister of Finance Airlangga Hartarto, as the nation continues to lead ASEAN in technological innovation. Current value stands at USD 150 billion, with projections showing rapid growth driven by expanding e-commerce, fintech, and digital infrastructure.

Defa: ASEAN’s Digital Framework
At the Brussels Economic Security Forum (BESF), Airlangga highlighted the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) as a pivotal initiative. This framework aims to strengthen regional integration, with Indonesia leading the charge as the region’s keketuaan (chairmanship) at the 2026 ASEAN summit. If fully implemented across all 10 ASEAN members, DEFA could boost the digital economy to USD 2 trillion by 2030, up from the current USD 1 trillion.

QR Payments Expand Across ASEAN
Indonesia’s QR code payment system, launched in 2025, is already enabling cross-border transactions in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, and even Saudi Arabia. Airlangga emphasized that this digital infrastructure will further enhance connectivity, allowing ASEAN nations to transact using their own currencies.

Growth Projections and Challenges
Airlangga noted that Indonesia’s digital economy-accounting for 40% of ASEAN’s total digital value-is poised to grow from USD 150 billion to USD 600 billion by 2030. Key drivers include a large population, expanding internet penetration, and a maturing tech ecosystem. However, achieving these targets requires sustained investment in infrastructure and cross-border collaboration.

A Roadmap for the Future
With DEFA as the cornerstone of ASEAN’s digital strategy, Indonesia aims to position itself as a global leader in digital innovation. As Airlangga stated, “The digital economy is not just about numbers-it’s about opportunity, connectivity, and progress.” The nation’s commitment to expanding QR payments and strengthening regional ties will be critical in realizing these ambitions.
